Description Balblair (Inverbreakie) Ferry Pier General view looking N towards Invergordon

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435010

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Invverbreakie Pier, Balblair, Ross and Cromarty This ramped ferry pier was designed by Thomas Telford for a ferry to Invergordon, probably to ship agricultural produce from Invergordon Harbour. There were three ferrymen's cottages, and a ferry inn was built at Balblair c.1830. This view shows the well-constructed masonry ramp which allowed the ferry to be loaded or unloaded at all states of the tide. It was designed for vehicular traffic. The small boat at the end in this view ferried pedestrians to Invergordon. Telford designed many ferry piers for crossings in the Highlands where a bridge was impracticable. This is one of the best-preserved. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
