Scope and Content First pound on the Caledonian Canal, Clachnaharry, near Inverness The construction of the sea lock which formed the eastern entrance to the Caledonian Canal involved the movement of earth to form an embankment in which the lock and most of the first pound could be formed. This view shows most of the first pound, looking towards the swing bridge and workshop lock. The ship is the Eilean Dubh (Black Isle), then the spare ferry for the Kessock crossing. On a canal a pound is the length of level canal between two locks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
