Description Jedburgh, Barrass Tannery View from SE (Upper Bongate Gardens) showing main building and chimney

Date 10/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 429283

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Barrass Tannery, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire As befitted a market town in the centre of a sheep-farming area, Jedburgh had several tanneries. This one was converted from a tweed mill, hence the character of the main building. This view shows the three-storey and attic former spinning mill, with stair tower on the left.. The octagonal brick chimney was built for the tweed mill. The location of the stair tower suggests that the mill was built with the notion of extending it. Leather was used for a wide range of purposes before synthetic substitutes were developed in the 20th century, and as tanning was largely a hand craft, and a slow process tanneries were very numerous.
