Scope and Content Barrass Tannery, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire As befitted a market town in the centre of a sheep-farming area, Jedburgh had several tanneries. This one was converted from a tweed mill, hence the character of the main building. This view shows the three-storey and attic former spinning mill, with stair tower on the left. In front and to the right are buildings added for tannery purposes. The octagonal brick chimney was built for the tweed mill. Leather was used for a wide range of purposes before synthetic substitutes were developed in the 20th century, and as tanning was largely a hand craft, and a slow process tanneries were very numerous.
