Scope and Content John Knox House, High Street, Edinburgh John Knox House, mentioned in 1525 as the property of Walter Reidpath, was inherited in 1556 by his great-granddaughter, Mariot Arres who married James Mossman, goldsmith to Mary Queen of Scots. John Knox, the Scottish Preacher, may have spoken from here but it is unlikely he lived here.. Below the first floor window is a garland, the initials IM and MA for James Mossman and Mariot Arres and the inscription 'LVFE GOD ABVFE AL AND YI NYCHTBOVR AS YI SELF'. To the right, a kneeling figure of Moses points to a sun. In 1560, as an ordained minister of St Giles, John Knox became the chief inspiration and influence of the Scottish Reformation. Parliament abolished papal authority, the mass was forbidden and a Confession of Faith approved, establishing Protestantism. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
