Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Edward Cowan, Bo'ness churchyard, Falkirk This gravestone commemorates Edward Cowan, a merchant, who died in 1756 aged 31. Within a laurel wreath is the mark of the Arms of the Stirling Guildry (the '4' symbol) over two sets of scales. The symbol was often used by merchants in the 18th century and derives from the sign used to mark bales of merchandise during the middle ages. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
