Scope and Content Bothwell Bridge, Bothwell, Lanarkshire Bothwell Bridge spans the river Clyde. It was widened in 1826, and again in 1871, when the cast and wrought iron footpaths were added. This view shows the almost semicircular arches, massive piers and prominent cutwaters which characterise pre-18th century bridges in Scotland. Bothwell Bridge was the scene of a battle in 1679 in which the Scottish Covenanters were defeated by Government forces under the Duke of Monmouth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
