Scope and Content Workers in Cart Bank Laundry, Kilbarchan Road, Johnstone, Renfrewshire Many laundry workers were women, as it was considered a suitable 'domestic' occupation. This view shows the women employed in the laundry at the time of this visit. Small laundries of this type were common in Scotland from c1900 until the 1960s, when domestic washing machines became common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
