Scope and Content Pier-head and slipway, Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll Ardbeg Distillery was founded in the late 18th century by Alexander Stewart, but is first recorded in operation in 1817-18. Like the other Islay distilleries, Ardbeg was built next to the sea for easy access to water-transport. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
