Scope and Content Interior of peat store, Laphroaig Distillery, Islay, Argyll The Laphroaig Distillery was established in the mid 19th century as part of a farm. It is a good example of the type of distillery which emerged after changes in the law in 1816 and 1823, and developed slowly to become a large production complex. Peat, because of its availability in the Islands, is the whisky industry's traditional fuel. Many distilleries were sited to take advantage of nearby peat cuttings, and Islay whisky is noted for the flavour infused into the malt during the drying process.
