Scope and Content Lybster, Caithness, Highland Lybster lies on the north-east coast of Caithness near the mouth of the Reisgill burn where the harbour is located. The village was founded in 1802 by the proprietor, General Patrick Sinclair of Lybster, who named the streets after Liberal statesmen. This view shows the village of Lybster laid out in a linear fashion along one main street that bisects the main road and runs along towards the sea cliff. The harbour at the mouth of the Reisgill burn can be seen centre top. The first harbour was built of timber in 1810 and was replaced two decades later by one of stone. In 1817, the port at Lybster had become successful enough to be recognised as the station for the Fishery Officer for Latheron Parish. In 1833, the station at Lybster was classed as the third largest herring port in Scotland after Wick and Fraserburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
