Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Robert Coutie, Cramond churchyard, Edinburgh This gravestone commemorates Robert Coutie, who died in 1730, aged 60. Also buried here is his second wife Janet Marshall, who died in 1773 aged 81. A periwigged cherub, with a startled expression, symbolises the ascent of the soul to heaven. Beneath, an hourglass carved in false relief exhorts us to consider our own mortality. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
