Scope and Content Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh, looking west towards the church Old Church Lane, a narrow walled lane that runs the length of the village, was originally the route to Duddingston Parish Church. Its continuation westwards from the church gates dates from 1856 when the road through Holyrood Park was constructed. The lane has a high stone wall running along its south side. On the north side are several detached early 19th-century houses, standing behind carefully tended gardens, and bounded by low walls and railings. Old Church Lane was originally named Church Lane, meaning 'the route to the church'. It was renamed Old Church Lane in 1966 when the only other 'Church Lane' in Edinburgh was renamed Gloucester Lane to 'avoid duplication'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
