Scope and Content India Street, Edinburgh, looking north from Queen Street Gardens India Street, built in 1819-23, is a broad thoroughfare running downhill from Queen Street Gardens, and is more secluded than the other north-south streets in the northern New Town. The street comes to an abrupt stop because of the steepness of the hill. India Street was largely built by the builders, William & Lewis Wallace, and included houses as well as main door tenements. At the north end the gradient becomes impossible, and the last section is a cul-de-sac ending in mid-air. India Street was built on land originally owned by the Heriot Trust, and plots were offered for feuing in 1807 at 5 shillings (25 pence) per foot (0.3m) in front, putting the street on an equal social status with Heriot Row and Abercromby Place.
