Scope and Content Aerial view of Tarbert, Canna, Highland The township of Tarbert was cleared of tenants in the mid-19th century by Donald MacNeill II. The stones from the township buildings are said to have been robbed to build the adjacent field walls. The remains of the township of Tarbert lie within the grass field bounded by the wall at the foot of the scree slope and the burn gully draining the improved ground. Nine buildings are visible, together with three enclosures and several clearance heaps. A survey of Canna and Sanday was undertaken by the Royal Commission to record all the archaeological sites and monuments and the landscape within which they lie. This landscape is published as RCAHMS Broadsheet 5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
