Ballymeanoch standing stones, from W

SC 375274

Description Ballymeanoch standing stones, from W

Date 1986

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 375274

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of A 22989

Scope and Content View from north-east of standing-stones at Ballymeanoch, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute The Ballymeanoch group of standing stones is arranged in two almost parallel rows of four and two stones apiece, aligned on a north-west to south-east axis. To the north-west of the group stood a monolith, perhaps an outlying stone to the arrangement. In this photograph, the arrangement of the stones is apparent, as are some of the cup-and-ring markings which decorate some of the stones. The Kilmartin valley is particularly rich in standing stones and stone circles, though the reasons for their construction remains obscure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
