Scope and Content Aerial view of Union Street and Castlegate area of Aberdeen Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, northew Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I c.1124-53. With 19th-century agricultural improvements, the city's population doubled as workers flocked there for alternative employment. This aerial view shows the area around Union Street and Castlegate (running diagonally from bottom left to top right). On the right is part of the city's harbour, and centre left is Marischal College and the Town House adjoining Town and County Buildings. Castlegate was formerly the town's market place and this is where the Market Cross is situated, along with the Tolbooth. Union Street was begun in 1801 and named to commemorate the union of the British and Irish Parliaments in that year. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
