Scope and Content Queen's Cross Free Church, Aberdeen Queen's Cross Free Church was built in 1880-1. It was one of many churches resulting from the Free Church's campaign to increase membership during the 1870s and 1880s. Its first minister was Dr George Adam Smith, a charismatic preacher and theologian. The church, with its pointed arches and flamboyant decoration, is built in the Gothic style copied from buildings of the later middle ages. In the 1843 Disruption of the Church of Scotland, ministers and congregations who disagreed with state interference in religion formed the break-away Free Church of Scotland. This led to hundreds of new churches built to cater for the Free Church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
