Scope and Content View of main entrance front of Robert Gordon's College/Hospital, Schoolhill, Aberdeen Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I between 1124 and 1153. With 19th-century agricultural improvements, the city's population doubled as workers flocked there for alternative employment. This is the main frontage of Robert Gordon's College/Hospital. Built to designs by William Adam in 1731-9, it was not occupied until 1750. Remodelled and extended by John Smith in 1833, it now houses the university, college and an art gallery. Robert Gordon (1665-1732) was the son of an Aberdeen advocate. He made his fortune as a merchant trading with the Polish port of Danzig (now Gdansk). He never married and left his fortune to help found a hospital for educating orphaned boys in Aberdeen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
