Scope and Content General view from north-east, Balfour Battery, Hoxa Head, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Balfour Battery is one of the coast batteries constructed at the entrance to Scapa Flow during World War II to stop hostile motor torpedo boats and other craft from entering the Flow. There was a huge concentration of air defences around the Orkney Islands to protect the naval fleet at Scapa Flow and the support bases on the rest of the islands. This photograph shows Balfour Battery. This coast battery used rapid-firing 12-pounder guns (later replaced with 6-pounder calibre). The battery overlooked Hoxa Sound, the main entrance to Scapa Flow. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
