Scope and Content Chimneypiece, Dining Room, Curling Hall, Largs, North Ayrshire (latterly the Marine and Curlinghall Hotel and now demolished) Curling Hall, a large mansion overlooking the seafront at Largs, was built in 1812. In 1892 the house was extended by the architect, Thomas Graham Abercrombie, and refurbished by Wylie & Lochhead, Glasgow, for John Clark. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1893. This massive, 17th-century style wooden chimneypiece has pairs of fluted Ionic columns supporting a cornice carved with Classical detailing, and an elaborate overmantel with mirror glass decoration and naturalistic carvings appropriate for a dining room. The doors flanking the chimneypiece open to the conservatory. In the 17th century, fireplaces in wealthy households were given prestigious treatment. They could be dignified with a frieze or cornice, and in a very grand room, the cornice would be supported by pilasters. The overmantel was often elaborately ornamented with the decoration often indicating the use of the room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
