Scope and Content Part of drawing showing section through a vault soffit of Friockheim Railway Viaduct Friockheim Railway Viaduct was built around 1840 for the Arbroath and Forfar Railway line between Arbroath and Montrose. This route was superseded in the 1880s by the North British Railway's direct coastal line. The viaduct was disused by 1914. The viaduct measures 189m in length and is 8.46m wide. It has eight (originally nine) elliptical arches to carry the railway line. At the southern end, two arches are infilled after modifications associated with a later girder bridge. This sketch shows a section through the soffit or underside of the arch. The whole arch is made up of six ribs bonded by six transverse ribs. The two ribs at the top of the arch are termed a double rib because they are close together. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
