Scope and Content Warsetter Farmhouse, Sanday, Orkney Islands, from south-east At an altitude of some 60m above sea level, Warsetter sits on the highest point of Sanday, one of the largest of the Orkney Islands. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with fertile soils and a temperate climate. Warsetter was a mixed arable farm with cattle and sheep. This shows the front of the 19th-century farmhouse, situated some way from the main steading complex, also built in the 19th century. The house had a flower garden in front and a vegetable garden on the west side. The garden is sheltered by a stone dyke, about 1m high, rising to 2.5m on the west. In 1932, a photograph of Mrs Horne's flower garden was published in a national gardening journal. She was proud of the pretty flowers she managed to grow despite the exposed nature of her garden. She admitted that sometimes her plants had to be covered with boxes to protect them from the strong winds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
