Scope and Content Interior of stoking-aisle of kiln at Blackpots Brick and Tile Works, Whitehills, Knock Head, Grampian Blackpots Brick and Tile Works was established on Blackpots Farm by Dr Saunders, and extended by his son in 1788. It produced pantiles until the early 20th century, bricks until 1946 and drainage-tiles from 1840 until it closed in the 1970s. The kiln's furnaces (on the left) were stoked with coal from the stoking-aisle. The coal was loaded into the aisle through the square openings along the outside wall. Although Scottish potteries made some use of local clay, their sites were usually chosen for their nearness to a good supply of coal. It took about 15 tons of coal to fire one ton of pottery.
