Scope and Content View from south-west showing south gable of gasometer house at former gasworks, Baltic Street, Leith, Edinburgh Work started on building the gasometer house at Baltic Street c.1835. Further buildings were erected before 1853, with office and courtyard buildings added in the later 19th century. This was a very large example of its kind, containing eight gasometers. This shows the south gable of the three-storeyed gasometer house. Now used as a timber yard, many of the windows in the complex have been blocked, although some of the tall round-arched windows remain louvred, as they were for ventilation. For (mistaken) safety reasons, the first gas-containers were housed in stone or brick buildings. However, these could trap an explosive mixture of leaked gas and air. The gasometer house at Leith is one of the last remaining examples of its type. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
