Scope and Content The Hall, Craig House (Thomas Clouston Clinic, Royal Edinburgh Hospital), Craighouse Road, Edinburgh Craig House, a huge 'French chateau' which dominates the north slope of Craiglockhart Hill, was designed by Sydney Mitchell in 1889-94 to preliminary sketch plans by Dr Thomas Clouston for the Royal Edinburgh Asylum. The great hall, with elaborate pilasters above a deep oak dado, has large semicircular windows breaking into the vault, and a magnificent painted ceiling which still retains its original colours above the level of the frieze. In 1894, the Journal of Decorative Art quoted: 'It is one of Dr Clouston's leading principles that in the treatment of the insane, their surroundings should be made as bright and as pleasant as possible'.
