Scope and Content Jib-crane inside Linthouse Engine Works, Govan, City of Glasgow Linthouse Engine Works was completed in 1872 and, by 1980, was the only remaining part of the shipbuilding yard of Alexander Stephen and Sons. The yard was established in 1869 on the country estate of Linthouse near the River Clyde. Alternate stanchions are fitted with 'jib-cranes' like this one. They can be swung out when needed for lifting components. Many large engineering workshops or foundries were built during the 19th-century heavy engineering expansion.
