Scope and Content PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM No. 70 : THE CANAAN LODGE ALBUM Interior of the boudoir, the former Canaan Lodge, No 43 Canaan Lane, Morningside, Edinburgh Canaan Lodge, built in 1800, stood in a beautiful setting, surrounded by trees and lawns, in five acres of land on the north side of Canaan Lane. The house was rebuilt after a fire in 1907, and later became a children's home. It was demolished in 1991. This room, with a plain ceiling and cornice, was used as a lady's small private room or bedroom, and is furnished very much in the style of the Edwardian era. The house was bought in 1814 by James Gregory, Professor of Medicine at Edinburgh University, who is remembered for 'the famous mixture which bears his name', a highly popular patent medicine for stomach upsets made from magnesia, rhubarb and ginger.
