Scope and Content Roman fort and temporary camp at Inverquharity, Angus The Roman fort at Inverquharity is built at the higher north-west end of a plateau at the mouth of Glen Clova, to the west of the confluence of the Prosen Water and the River South Esk. The temporary camp lies to the east of the fort. Lying on a prominment ridge, this fort has an excellent view into Glen Clova. The fort is small, roughly 60m square, and is surrounded by three ditches with only a single entrance on the south-west. Following Agricola's advances into Scotland, a number of forts, fortlets and roads were built. Forts and fortlets were used to keep watch on glens, whilst roads allowed rapid deployment of soldiers to deal with trouble. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
