Scope and Content Diagram of slubbing-billy on first floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay This slubbing-billy in the woollen mill at Bridgend may be the only example to survive in Britain. It was used to process partly spun wool or 'rovings' from the piecing-machine into a leaner yarn which could then be spun by the spinning-jenny. A batch or 'draft' of rovings is stretched out between the carriage and the frame. The locking-bar clamps the frame end, and the draft is stretched and spun. Then the bar is unclamped and the yarn is wound onto the spindles pulling the next draft through. There are nine large bobbins. Each comes from the piecing-machine and holds ten strands or 'rovings'. Each roving is wound onto a separate spindle, making a total of 90 spindles on the carriage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
