Scope and Content Detail of grain-feeder of grain-mill at Machrimore, Argyll and Bute The grain-mill at Machrimore was built in 1839 and is typical of 19th-century water-powered vertical mills. One of the last two working water-mills in Kintyre, it went out of service in the 1950s. Soon afterwards, most of its machinery was removed. Grain poured into the hopper and flowed out the bottom, through the wooden trough and into the mill-stones. A cam, which looks like an egg-whisk, turned with the mill and shook the trough to keep the grain moving at the correct rate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
