Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Cairnholy, Dumfries and Galloway The two chambered cairns at Cairnholy, above Wigtown Bay, are two of the best example of the Clyde group. Cairnholy I is the lower of the two and lies to the S. It is the more impressive though has been robbed of much of the cairn material. This view of the cairn shows the eight stone pillars which formed the concave forecourt. At least six fires had been lit in this area. The slab-lined chamber would have been covered by a small cairn to which was added an antechamber. The site was excavated in 1949. Finds included a small cup-and-ring-marked slab which is now in the RMS. A larger cup-and-ringed slab is in the inner chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
