Scope and Content Elevation of Clackmannan Tolbooth, Clackmannan Clackmannan tolbooth is in late 17th-century style. However, the parliamentary order to build one came in 1592. There was concern because the sheriff had to hold open-air courts at the mercat cross and even keep prisoners in his own house. The spire is like the one at Alloa Old Parish Church. Lawrence Dundas donated a new bell in 1765 and a new clock was presented in 1865. However, the tolbooth was a 'heap of ruins' by 1792. It was abandoned except for its steeple in 1822.
