Oblique aerial view of Glenlochar Roman Fort.

Description Oblique aerial view of Glenlochar Roman Fort.

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number SC 337203

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of A 56545 CN

Scope and Content Fort at Glenlochar, Dumfries and Galloway The fort at Glenlochar was first identified in an aerial photograph in 1949. From the ground it appears to be little more than a ditched platform. Before 1949 the site was though to have been that of an abbey. The site was excavated in 1952. This is an aerial shot of the fort. The characteristic gridded rectangle of a Roman fort is very obvious. The defences are quite broad. There was a succession of three forts on the site, preceded by temporary Roman occupations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
