Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of the dresser in house 1. As with the other furniture in the village, it was constructed from stone slabs. One of the reasons for this is the scarcity of wood on the islands. Most wood would have been drift wood and was used for roofing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
