Scope and Content 1969 view of Dumbarton Prison, Dumbarton and Clydebank Dumbarton Prison replaced the earlier tolbooth. The architect convinced the Jail Committee to build a separate prison, rather than make it part of the new court-house. Most of the funding came from the county council. The original contractor was a member of the council. The prison was enlarged in 1840. It went out of use in 1883. In 1973 it was demolished except for its entrance-doorway.
