Scope and Content Banff Town-house, Aberdeenshire Banff Town-house accommodated the town and county councils. The steeple replaced a dangerous one demolished in 1762. The main building replaced the old 16th-century tolbooth which was also demolished in 1794. The local MP donated 100 guineas to the cost. The main block was on burgh property, but the next-door house had to be demolished so that there would be room 'for making a handsome front'. The town council inspected a prototype model before choosing a roof design. Admiral Gordon, who lived next door, tried to stop the steeple being built because it might fall on his house, or if by 'miracle' it stood, attract bees. The architect reported 'no risk of falling, except from an earthquake or lightning'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
