Scope and Content Interior of Redfern Ltd, Ladies' Tailors, Nos 31-2 Princes Street, Edinburgh Redfern Ltd, Ladies' Tailors, moved to new premises in Princes Street in 1893. This photograph, taken by the architectural photographer, Bedford Lemere, provides an unique record of the interior of a late 19th-century 'haute couture' ladies' outfitters. The heavily panelled interior, decorated with carvings and tall wooden balusters, is free from clutter. The mantle draped over the chair (left) and the parasols leaning against the table (right) suggest the scene may have been carefully set by Lemere. Redfern Ltd were 'artists in ladies dress' and provided a made-to-measure service for wealthy clients. They also supplied the latest dress accessories, including parasols, designed to protect ladies' pale complexions from the damaging effect of sunlight. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
