Scope and Content Dean Village, Edinburgh, from the north side of the Water of Leith Bridge Dean Village, one of Edinburgh's most ancient and picturesque villages, lies in the steep river valley of the Water of Leith beneath the tall arches of the Dean Bridge. It was originally the largest of Edinburgh's old milling settlements. The village still retains some 17th- and 18th-century mill buildings and millers' houses. The old coaching route from Edinburgh ran through the village, across the 18th-century stone bridge and up the steep Dean Path towards Queensferry. In 1830 the new Dean Bridge carried traffic across the valley high overhead, but the village continued to flourish until the rise of the giant grain rmills of Leith in the late 19th century proved too great competition for the local mills.
