Scope and Content The Old Tolbooth, Bell's Brae, Dean Village, Edinburgh At the foot of Bell's Brae, on the south side of the river facing the old bridge in the centre of the village, is the Old Tolbooth, a granary built in 1675 for the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) of Edinburgh. This splendid rubble-built building has two rectangular stair-turrets with carved doorways. Above one an inscription reads: 'God bless the Baxters of Edinbrugh uho built this Hous 1675'. In 1976 the building was restored and sympathetically converted into flats. The exterior was re-harled, the crowsteps to the stair-turrets were carefully restored, and half-shutters were fitted to the windows. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
