Scope and Content Royal College of Physicians, Nos 9-10 Queen Street, Edinburgh The Royal College of Physicians, designed by Thomas Hamilton in 1844, was built on the former site of a house in Queen Street acquired by the college in the previous year, after their old hall in George Street was demolished in 1843. The three-storeyed building, set forward from its neighbours, has a central doorway framed by a four-column portico. A pedimented portico frames the centre window on the first floor. The three statues are of Hippocrates, Asclepius and Hygeia. Hippocrates, born c.460 BC on the island of Cos, was a Greek physician who is traditionally regarded as the father of medicine. Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health, was worshipped along with Asclepius, the Greco-Roman god of medicine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
