Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is an aerial view of the settlement. It consists of a number of similar houses which are linked together by a series of passages. There are also paved areas. The houses have been built into earlier midden deposits.
