The building costs were met by local subscriptions. In 1741 the Marquis of Annandale paid for the construction of a steeple. The 1743 steeple was built to plans in the council's possession 'for somtyme past' and funded by the Marquis of Annandale. The burgh bell's inscription records its gift by the Duke of Queensberry in 1757. The Latin on the bell reads: EX DONO NOBILLISSIMI CAROLI DUCIS QUEENSBERRY ET DOVER 1757 WM EVANS FECIT.
