Scope and Content Gravestone of Janet Liwd, Bowden churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Janet Liwd, daughter of a local tenant farmer, who died in 1712 aged 10. This portrait of a young girl with long freely-flowing hair is presumably that of Janet. The skill of the stonemason is evident in the detail incorporated into the carving. Above are the wings and head of a cherub on the other side of the stone. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
