Scope and Content Altar screen inside the former Chapel of the Cathedral Mission, The Old Tolbooth, Bell's Brae, Dean Village, Edinburgh At the foot of Bell's Brae is the Old Tolbooth, a granary built in 1675 for the Incorporation of Baxters (bakers) of Edinburgh. It was adapted c.1900 for use as a Mission by St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, and converted into flats in 1976. The chapel, adapted from a large room in the building, was designed c.1900 by the architect, Sir Robert Lorimer, and the bright figurative triptych behind the altar was painted by the illustrator and enameller, Phoebe Anna Traquair. Phoebe Anna Traquair (1852-1936) was one of the most renowned enamellers of her period. Much of her later work was of a religious nature, and she carried out commissions for Sir Robert Lorimer, St Mary's Cathedral and many other churches in Scotland.
