Scope and Content Site plan, view of Falkland Palace, Fife Falkland Palace was remodelled in 1537-41 for King James V (died 1542). The south range dates from his reign, as do the exteriors of the earlier buildings. The east and north ranges were probably both built for King James IV (1488-1513). Investigations have uncovered the remains of Falkland Castle (shown in black). This was levelled by King Edward III of England in 1337, rebuilt in time to be the prison of the Duke of Rothesay in 1401, and confiscated by the Crown in 1437. King Edward III of England's invasion in 1337 was the last in a series of expensive campaigns meant to put Edward Balliol on the Scottish throne. These trailed off when England and France began the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
