Scope and Content Undated gravestone with Resurrection scene, Kinclaven Church and Churchyard, Perth & Kinross This monument features an arched surround which frames a Resurrection scene. A large angel in long robes blows a trumpet, from which flows an inscribed scroll. This probably read 'Awake ye Dead', or a similar message. At the base of the stone are two corpses in coffins, one of whom is rising at the sound of the angel's call. They represent the dead in the churchyard rising on the Day of Judgement. The imagery of many Resurrection scenes found on gravestones is derived from the following text from I Corinthians 15: 51-2: 'Behold, I show you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed'. This small gravestone has been built into a wall, and no inscription or date is visible. It probably dates from the early 18th century. It is not known if this was the original position for the monument, but its style suggests it was originally used as a headstone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
