Scope and Content Bellcote on roof of former cooperage, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the 'Long John' blends. This shows the bellcote above the clock on top of the copper-covered former cooperage (a special building for the repair and maintenance of barrels) roof. The blue dial of the clock is painted with gilded numerals and is sheltered by a copper-covered dome with ball finial. The clock is musical and chimes upon the hour. The distillery complex at Tormore is centred around an ornate central works block and tall chimney (which was originally to be disguised as a giant whisky bottle). Workers' housing and amenities such as a recreation hall and a curling pond were also provided for this small community. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
