Scope and Content Ornamental dovecot, Tormore Distillery, Highland Tormore was the first new distillery to be built in Scotland in the 20th century. It was designed by architect Sir Albert Richardson, a past president of the Royal Academy and completed in 1960. In 1972 the number of stills was increased from four to eight, and it continues to produce spirit for the 'Long John' blends. This shows a dovecot constructed from an old whisky barrel. It stands on a strong base supported by carved brackets in the form of thistles and scrolls. The roof is thatched and several entrances with landing platforms are cut into the barrel. The gardens at Tormore surround the distillery cottages, works and manager's houses. They include ornamental birdhouses, topiary (hedges clipped into decorative shapes) rockeries and beds of shrubs.
