Scope and Content Pinkston Power Station, North Canal Bank Street, Glasgow This power station was built in 1900-1 to supply power to the Glasgow Corporation tramways, which were being electrified at the time. It was designed by Harry B Measures, engineer, London. It was nationalised in 1947, and in 1952-4 a concrete cooling tower was added, the largest in Europe at the time. This shows the station from the west, with part of the cooling tower on the right. Note that camouflage paint had been applied to the power station during World War II. The water is a branch from the 'Cut of Junction' between the Forth & Clyde and Monkland Canals. The existence of this station encouraged Glasgow Corporation to replace some of its trams with trolleybuses from 1949. The last of the tramway system closed in 1962. The power station continued in use for a period supplying the national grid, but it closed in the mid-1960s and subsequently demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
